Content

This program will provide an overview of the CE-CERT model and assist practitioners in implementing the five skills components in their own practice to support and sustain a career in helping professions. CE-CERT (Components for Enhancing Clinician Experience and Reducing Trauma) is a set of evidence-informed skills for supporting the emotion regulation of practitioners. CE-CERT is a synthetic model that integrates skills and practices from research bodies including evidence-based trauma treatment, mindfulness and third-wave approaches, cognitive behavioral therapies and narratology, and sociology and occupational psychology. The resulting skill portfolio defines five practice domains:

1. Experiential Engagement (synthesized from trauma treatments and consistent with exposure therapies, ACT, and mindfulness-based psychotherapies);

2. Reducing rumination (derived from cognitive behavioral therapies with emphasis on rumination-focused CBT (RF-CBT));

3. Conscious Narrative (supported by CBT research and clinical narratology);

4. Reducing Emotional Labor (supported by sociological and occupational psychology research on emotional labor); and

5. Parasympathetic Recovery (supported by medical/physiological research on the stress response and stress effects and psychological research on grounding and mindfulness approaches).

After this workshop, participants will be able to:

1. Describe each of the five skills components that comprise the CE-CERT model;

2. Describe the role of each domain in supporting trauma worker’s sense of well-being and emotion regulation during times of stress exposure;

3. Formulate personal action plan for implementing one or more of these skills in their own personal, clinical, or administrative practice;

4. Distinguish concepts of “self-care” and stress recovery from active, on-the-job emotion regulation skills.
