Robin Furuta Endowed Scholarship Fund

Robin Sue Chiyoko Furuta was born in 1962 to Japanese-American parents living in Denver.

After receiving her BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute, she attended CU Boulder, and from there found her way to teaching "making pots", first at the Arvada Center, where she was initially a lab technician, and then later ran the ceramics program. She also taught at Red Rocks Community College, the Jewish Community Center, the Art Students League, Metropolitan State University, and was the Head of the Ceramics Department at Arapahoe Community College, where previously she had taught for many years. She received her MFA in the Graduate Studies Program at Regis University in 2014. Her work has been in shows across the country.

Robin was a consummate potter of functional work – work which was understated and elegant; quiet and profound; beautiful and approachable. Pots to be used daily, and revered as treasures.

Robin said in an autobiography: "As I look back the one consistent part of my life is I am still making pots… I have found that the interaction with students in teaching and the solitude of being a studio potter creates a nice balance. "

And she was the consummate teacher. Her legacy will live on in the work of her students, and in the work of her students' students; and in the individual, personal and private memories we all have and cherish.

It is in this vein, that the Robin Furuta Scholarship is offered.
