Joy Spencer Johnson wore many hats during her 25+ years at Stephens College. After managing the college bookstore she taught various classes in the Business department and, for two years, acted as interim department chair for the Fashion department. During this time, Joy organized and led several summer trips to Europe. During these 6-7 week trips, 20 Stephens students traveled through numerous countries visiting businesses and experiencing their cultures and histories. From Mercedes-Benz in Stuttgart, Germany, to leather factories in Italy, to champagne in France, and the Bank of England in London, each trip was educational and enlightening. Joy’s love of travel, coupled with helping students see beyond their current world and learn from businesses abroad, have inspired this scholarship.
It is the family’s hope that new and future generations of students will have the opportunity to expand their horizons and learn from different perspectives and cultures, to both expand their education and to help them help shape a more inclusive world.
