Now in its 27th year, the Wissahickon Birdathon is a treasured spring ritual of our Wissahickon Trails community. On Friday, April 30 and Saturday, May 1, teams will explore the Wissahickon watershed, and beyond, to identify as many species as possible during this 24-hour fundraiser. Birders of all ages and skill levels are encouraged to join the fun!
Your donation to a team, individual or overall event supports Wissahickon Trails’ efforts to preserve and restore habitat for birds and all wildlife. You could also win a prize! Guess how many species the teams will identify and the closest guess wins.
Open Space Preservation
We continually work to protect new areas already connected to preserved land, those that border or contain a stream or creek, and those that are important habitat for wildlife.
Habitat Improvement
Birds serve as indicators of environmental health. We focus on special projects to support species like eastern bluebirds, willow flycatchers, field sparrows, and chimney swifts, which are present in the Wissahickon but declining in number.
Wildlife Monitoring
Bird surveys help us understand which birds rely on our preserves throughout the year, and allows us to document if and when changes occur. One way we monitor birds is by operating a summer banding station at Crossways Preserve.
